Breakfast Tips for Healthy Eating
Breakfast is often touted as the most significant meal of the day when talking about healthy eating and habits and that is most definitely the case!
After going without food while you sleep it is important that you refuel for the day ahead. Eating breakfast provides you with the energy you need to perform necessary tasks at work or school. Going without breakfast is not advisable. Keep in mind that breakfast stands for break-the-fast.
Remember to break the fast every morning upon rising for optimum health and wellness.
If you don’t currently eat breakfast on a regular basis then you can change that now. If you do but your breakfast choices could use some improvements then read on for some tips for eating healthier breakfasts.
Healthy Eating Is About Breads and Cereals
Avoid white bread or any cereals that are enriched at all costs. Instead reach for whole grain bread and whole grain cereals or oatmeal. These foods are high in both fiber and nutrients and allow for the slow release of energy throughout the morning hours.
This is particularly good for children in terms of their school work and for you when you have an early business meeting or a demanding work day ahead of you!
Always choose cereals that have a plentiful supply of nutrients and in particular contain B vitamins, vitamin D and iron. All of these important nutrients can further increase the level of energy you have for the busy hours ahead.
Before you buy a cereal make sure to check the package labeling to determine how much salt and/or sugar it contains. The best choices for breakfast cereals will contain a minimum of both.
Make sure however that you don’t buy a cereal low in sugar and then heap white sugar or brown sugar on top of it for extra flavoring. If you crave more sweetness on your cereal then add a dash of cinnamon. You can also mix in fresh or dried fruits to give it that little extra in terms of taste.
Healthy Eating Incorporates Fruit Juice
Fruit juice, such as a glass of orange juice is a welcome addition to any breakfast. The reason for this is because the vitamin C in the juice will encourage the absorption of iron that comes from the bread or cereal that you have already eaten during the meal.
Iron is an essential nutrient, especially for your children as it is instrumental in terms of growth and development.
Milk and Dairy Products Are Also Included In Healthy Eating
Calcium is necessary for healthy bones and teeth. To get the calcium you require make sure that you drink milk and/or consume a dairy product at breakfast. Drink low fat or skim milk, eat a piece of low fat cheese and/or eat yogurt.
Choose yogurt with probiotics whenever possible.
Always Make Sure To Hydrate to Start the Day
Start your morning with a glass of water and make sure you drink enough water, milk and/or fruit juice at breakfast to ensure that you are well hydrated. Continue this important trend throughout the day.
Here’s Something a Little Special
To make your breakfast a little more exciting and/or if you find yourself in a hurry, why not make a smoothie with low fat milk or yogurt, fresh fruit and/or fruit juice?
Try a banana or strawberry smoothie! A smoothie is a delicious treat to start the day that goes down oh so smooth!
This can be all part of you new healthy eating routine.
